Pilates, originally called Contrology, was formed by Joseph Pilates during the First World War with the intention to improve the rehabilitation process for injured soldiers. During this period, the system was designed to aid soldiers in regaining their health by strengthening and stretching deep stabilizing muscles. The focus was on fewer, more precise movements, requiring control and technique, rather than increased repetition. Joseph believed that mental and physical health were essential to one another, leading to a method of total body conditioning. Pilates uses centering, concentration, control, precision, breath, and flowing movement (the Pilates principles) to establish a perfect working body from the inside out.
